On April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day, taking time to reflect on ways we can help
support and protect our planet. Small actions can make a big impact, even in your own
home! This year try some of these green tips.
Avoid “Vampire” energy drain
Unplug and power down devices when not in use to stop additional power use.
We often remember to turn off our lights when we leave the room, but not unplug
what we’re done with using!
Swap Lighting where possible
LED light bulbs use significantly less wattage than incandescent bulbs even
swapping room by room can drop your energy use
Adjust your Washing
Wash your clothing in cold or room temperature water where you can. Certain
cycles may require tough love, but for standard loads give your water heater a
rest. Make sure to run full loads, to avoid water waste.
Reduce Paper Waste
Switch to paperless billing and mailings where possible and opt out of junk mail.
Recycle the paper you do throw away to help reduce landfill waste
Start a Garden
This one works two ways! Starting a garden can help lower your food cost by
supplementing your groceries. Start small with some herbs or green onions, and
work your way up as your skill and garden grows! You can also utilize food
scraps as fertilizer, instead of adding them to your trash to sit in a landfill.
Switch to Reusable
Switch to reusable products where you can. Swap out plastic shopping bags from
the grocery store with reusable cloth totes. A small investment can go a long way
in reducing waste. And reusable water bottles are not only good for the
environment, but they can usually help keep your water cooler in the Florida heat!
These are only a few of the small changes we can make around our home. Every
action- big or small, makes a difference in protecting our planet. And there are plenty of
ways we can work together to improve the environment around us and the Earth.
And if you’re in the market for a home that fits your environmental goals, we can help!
